We all want to do something great with our lives. When my
grandfather died of melanoma in 1998, I realized that I wanted to
dedicate my life to improving the human race though medicine. My
grandparents were high school sweethearts, got married young, and had
a family. It was the perfect fairy tale; my grandfather had just
retired, and he and my grandmother were looking forward to traveling
together and watching their grandchildren grow up. My grandfather
was supposed to see me graduate college and grow old with my
grandmother. While that reality has passed my grandparents, our work
this summer can help ensure that someone else’s fairy tale has a
happily ever after.
