I adore a certain picture of a beaming toddler, waddling down the sidewalk with the help of an old man with inch thick glasses. It’s sad knowing I can’t remember my grandfather who loved me, and that my grandmother didn’t live to see my parents marry. Both had lung cancer, the result of being heavy smokers during a time when no one knew the side effects of tobacco. I want to bike across the country for them, and another family I love that has been irreparably impacted by cancer. What motivates me most is knowing that it is difficult to find someone whose life hasn’t been affected by cancer.
By doing the 4K, I want to support those who are fighting against cancer and those who are working to find a cure. I also recognize how important it is to support advocacy for cancer awareness and prevention, because it is possible to save lives through education. By biking to San Francisco, I can only hope to make a difference and inspire others to do the same.
