Day 16 (67 miles) Litchfield, IL to St.
We took off later than normal today, since half of us spent the night watching soccer. After many refills on coffee at the Super 8 “continental breakfast bar”, we finally got back on the road.

We had lunch in the small town of Alton, Ill. outside of St. Louis. Subway was generous enough to once again donate lunch for us. We ate in the town square by statues of Stephen Douglas and Abe Lincoln (apparently this spot was where they had their last debate.) Coincidentally, Travis and Gary also had a debate over the last packet of mayo. After lunch we crossed the “Mighty Miss”. We had a short and nice ride into St. Louis form the north.

We arrived at Washington University campus late in the afternoon. Before getting our dorm rooms, we marked a very special occasion- the 1000th mile. Somebody came up with the brilliant idea of chest painting “1K DOWN 3K TO GO” on the guys for a picture. Unfortunately, chest paint is hard to come by in the Midwest, so we opted for red lipstick instead.

We were fortunate enough to have dinner provided for us at Schlafly’s tap room. This microbrewery is known throughout St. Louis as having some of the best pub food in town. We all ate our fill, and then some. We ended hanging out in the dorms and getting some much needed sleep.
