Day 58

It ain't over 'till the fat lady sings. Many of us were reminded of this saying today after having seemingly endless problems. All together, our group had a couple of falls at low speed, a broken helmet, one flat tire after another (seven or eight in total), a narrow escape from a potential multi-bicycle accident, a bloody nose, and a bent frame. The worst part of the day was the intense heat. Somehow, we made our way to our destination before the sun went down. Actually, we made it in before everyone else because they stopped at a bike shop on the way.

In some ways, the beginning of the day contrasted sharply with the end of the day. In the morning, it was extremely hot and the sun was directly above us and we biked through a very rural landscape. In the evening, we rode through sprawling suburbia, and the air cooled down quite a bit due to our proximity to the bay. In fact, there was a thick layer of fog in the sky.

I greatly appreciated having a hot showers at the end of the day. Babak was intent on introducing the group to In-N-Out Burger, so he took everyone's order and brought it back for us. He had billed In-N-Out Burger as making the best burger out of all the fast food chains. After having a taste, I must agree with him.

After dinner, we had our final Pow-Wow to allow for us to reflect on the past two months. The Pow-Wow was moving, and it lasted into the early morning hours. Eventually, we all hit the hay to get whatever amount of rest that we could before our big day tomorrow.
