DAY OFF
After 6 long, arduous days of cycling we had our first much needed day off in Cleveland, OH, today. We woke up and headed to the University Hospital, where we learned from Amanda and Maria about how music therapy is used with cancer patients to alleviate the pain and stress of cancer treatment. A game where we attempted to quickly pass many small balls around a circle with our eyes closed was compared to the overwhelming feelings that come with a cancer diagnosis. After having been diagnosed with a melanoma earlier this year, I remembered the confusion and frustration that came with the barrage of information, doctors, and decisions to make. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the music was a great way for us to relax and get rid of some of the tensions we’ve been feeling from the last six days of non-stop biking.

After lunch, one group checked out the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Science Center while the others stayed at the dorms and ran errands. It was nice to be able to just do nothing and relax our bodies and spirits. We had an incredible dinner of tacos and burritos. Muchas gracias to Pepe and all the wonderful staff at Mi Pueblo for so graciously donating dinner—Estaran en nuestros corazones!

I’ve been very impressed with everyone in the group during our first week on the road. The team has consistently worked together to overcome our numerous challenges, despite the physical and emotional tolls inflicted upon them. The trip is still in its infancy, but as the 4K director I couldn’t be happier with how things are going so far. We’ve met so many inspiring people that continue to remind us why we’re doing this trip.

I’d like to close with a greeting to our friends and family back home, especially everyone we met throughout the year at Hope Lodge. As great as all the places so far have been they can never replace Hope Lodge, and I miss my weekly visits to my “home away from home”. To those of you that are still there, keep fighting and don’t forget that we’re doing this trek especially for you!
