Michigan City, IN
Lagrange, IN to Michigan City, IN
76 miles

We started off the day a few miles north of Lagrange, IN packing in as much cereal and fruit bars that would
sustain us for the 76 mile, slightly hillier ride into Michigan City, IN. It was a nice day out and every group made good time getting in. We stayed at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Michigan City, IN. We would all like to thank everyone that took the time to cook us food, the lasagna was great and I believe we are still eating the cookies that came with the now consumed ice cream. Before I get too far into my description of the church I have to thank Rev. Kohlbecker once again. Not only did he show us around their beautiful church but also his personal residence which was accurately described as the house from the "Clue" game due to all of the winding staircases and libraries. The church was originally built in 1889 and was actually the cathe dral for Northern Indiana for some time. The church building itself is huge and has seen many changes over the years. The dining hall on the second floor was quite big and could easily have held large parties. Going up another flight of stone stairs leads to a balcony that looks over the dining hall. The hall used to be a theater for silent movies and could easily seat a few hundred people for a movie screening or a play. The basement of the building where we set up
our presentation used to be a basketball court and the old locker rooms were where we showered after the day.
Thank you to everyone who set up the shower gift bags and towels for us, it is the little things like that that
can turn a day around. We all smelled like peppermint the rest of the night and my feet felt better in the
morning after a good scrub. In the evening Rev. Kohlbecker took us for a grand tour of the grounds, we literally saw everything, from the view from the roof to the catacombs beneath the church. We looked at 150 year old church documents from the vault to the gardens outside where Garrett made a new friend in Rev. Kohlbecker's dog.
I have never before been on a tour where 20+ tired college students have been so fascinated for over 2 hours which we are all very thankful for. In the morning we all consumed the wonderfully prepared quiche dishes and headed off to Chicago.

Once again we would all like to extend our thanks to Rev. Kohlbecker and everyone that helped make our stay in
Michigan City enjoyable. Your congregation has a beautiful church and I know that future years will remember the day as well as I have.

*Since we have very limited access to computers and Internet access on this trip some of these journals get updated a couple of days after events happen so please do not worry if we don't update every day immediately, we are all still alive and pedaling, also we (I) apologize for any errors and omissions caused by excessive time in the sun and sitting on a very small seat.
